Leave No Trace

This set of Seven Principles isn’t a stuffy set of rules, it is the universal standard and code of conduct that ensures you, your fellow explorers, and future generations can enjoy and respect the great outdoors. Beyond that, it’s also the secret menu for something as simple as “how to live your ENTIRE LIFE as a man or woman of honor.”

Plan Ahead and Prepare

Each time your family leaves the house is an opportunity to highlight the values of this Principle. Where are we going? What do we need to be successful? What challenges might we encounter? How can we be prepared for those? Getting out of the house on time can be a mission.

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces

Go on a hike and discuss why it is important to stay on trails. Going off trail can damage or kill plant or animal species, and can hurt the ecosystems that surround the trail. Also, poison oak! That plant was my personal “hot lava” when I was a budding explorer.

Dispose of Waste Properly

This is a great one for keeping the house clean. Throw away your dang trash! But why? Similar to our footprints, trash can hurt ecosystems, kill animals, and ruin the beauty of nature for others.

Leave What You Find

This is another great one to practice on hikes (or in grocery stores where the octopus arms from your cart reach and grab for everything you don’t need). Explain that if everyone took a “souvenir” then there’d be nothing left for others to enjoy. That rock might be a spider’s home!

Minimize Campfire Impacts

While we can’t just go around starting fires to practice this Principle, we can understand the impact of our play on the environment. It’s ok to have a good time as long as what we’re doing isn’t causing permanent damage.

Respect Wildlife

This is my favorite for teaching my oldest child how to respect his younger brother. Don’t chase pigeons and pet dogs gently; every animal has feelings (and many have teeth).

Be Considerate of Other Visitors

This Principle is the easiest of the Seven to practice because it is applicable in almost any place at any time. Be your authentic self and do what makes you happy but understand how your activities impact others. Brilliant.
